Use
Androstenedione is a 19-carbon steroid hormone produced in the adrenal glands and gonads. It serves as a precursor in the biochemical pathway producing the androgen testosterone and estrogens estrone and estradiol. Monitoring androstenedione levels aids in the diagnosis and therapeutic monitoring of conditions such as congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). In CAH, there is an increased production of adrenal steroids due to enzyme deficiencies, leading to elevated androstenedione levels. Elevated androstenedione also assists in diagnosing PCOS, associated with hyperandrogenism, menstrual irregularities, and increased risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
Special Instructions
To ensure consistency in test results, specimens should be collected at a consistent time before the administration of glucocorticoid doses, especially in patients undergoing treatment for conditions like CAH.
Limitations
The test was developed by LabCorp and has not been cleared or approved by the FDA. Random serum steroid levels in patients may fluctuate with time of day and glucocorticoid administration timing. Gel-barrier tubes are not recommended due to potential absorption issues affecting androstenedione levels.
