Antigen Testing, Rh Phenotype
Also known as: IRL-RHPHEN
Use
The Antigen Testing, Rh Phenotype is used to assess the Rh phenotype status of maternal, paternal, or newborn individuals. This test determines the presence of specific antigens (D, C, E, c, e) on red blood cells, which are significant in the context of hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN). Identifying the Rh phenotype aids in the management and treatment decisions for pregnant women and newborns at risk of Rh incompatibility, preventing serious health issues such as anemia and jaundice in newborns.
Special Instructions
This test includes the antigens D, C, E, c, e. The Rh phenotype will be added if not ordered or previously performed by ARUP Laboratories. Additional charges may apply for this service.
Limitations
The test does not detect all possible antigens on red blood cells and is limited to those specified (D, C, E, c, e). Results should be interpreted in the context of clinical findings and other laboratory tests. Using inappropriate specimen types such as serum or plasma separator tubes can lead to rejection of the sample.
