Antimicrobial Susceptibility - mecA/mecC Genes by PCR

Use
The test provides a gold standard for detecting oxacillin/nafcillin resistance in Staphylococcus species by determining the presence of mecA and mecC genes. These genes are responsible for conferring resistance to nearly all beta-lactam antibiotics, including methicillin and oxacillin. The identification of these genes is crucial for appropriate antibiotic therapy management, especially in infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative Staphylococcus species.
Special Instructions
An additional processing fee will be billed for all organisms not submitted in pure culture, as indicated in the specimen requirements. If species identification is not provided, identification will be performed at ARUP Laboratories, with additional charges applicable.
Limitations
The test is limited to detecting mecA and mecC genes and does not provide susceptibility information for other antibiotics or resistance mechanisms. It requires actively growing Staphylococcus aureus or coagulase-negative Staphylococcus in pure culture to be effective. Mixed cultures or non-viable organisms are not acceptable and will lead to test rejection.
