Use
The Antithrombin, Enzymatic (Activity) test is recommended to detect antithrombin deficiency, which can be a risk factor for thrombosis if inherited. It helps in diagnosing antithrombin deficiency by excluding other acquired conditions that can cause decreased antithrombin levels, such as liver disease, acute thrombosis, or heparin therapy.
Special Instructions
Ensure separated specimens are submitted when multiple tests are ordered to avoid cross-contamination. Specimens must be critically frozen to maintain sample integrity.
Limitations
Antithrombin activity might be artificially overestimated in the presence of direct thrombin inhibitors. It is important to exclude anticoagulant medications as potential causes of altered antithrombin levels before diagnosing inherited deficiency. The test may yield false results if specimen collection guidelines are not strictly followed, especially regarding freezing and transportation conditions.
