Use
The Barium Quantitative, Serum or Plasma test is a diagnostic tool used for the detection and quantification of barium levels in the serum or plasma of a patient. It is essential in cases of suspected barium exposure or poisoning, as barium is a toxic metal. The quantitative analysis aids in monitoring and managing the patient's exposure levels, guiding clinical decisions for treatment and management of toxicity symptoms.
Special Instructions
Separate the serum or plasma from cells as soon as possible or within two hours of collection. Transfer 1 mL of the sample to an acid-washed transfer vial or an ARUP trace element-free transport tube. It is recommended to use a certified metal-free container for specimen collection to prevent contamination. Testing is performed by NMS Labs and the collected data may be reviewed digitally according to CLIA regulations.
Limitations
The test has not been cleared or approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. Certain collection tubes may artifactually increase measured barium concentrations, which can complicate the interpretation of results. Elevated results may also result from environmental contamination at the time of specimen collection. It is recommended to verify unexpected elevated results by retesting with a new specimen collected in a trace metal-free container.
