Use
This test is used to evaluate occupational exposure to benzene, a volatile organic compound. Benzene exposure is a recognized health hazard and is linked to acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and other blood disorders. Monitoring benzene levels in blood is crucial for workers in industries where benzene is present to ensure that their exposure levels are within safe limits.
Special Instructions
Blood should be drawn at the end of the shift to accurately reflect benzene exposure during the workday. It is critical to fill the blood collection tubes adequately to prevent volatilization of benzene into the headspace. Ensure proper labeling and timely transportation of the specimens to maintain specimen integrity.
Limitations
The test has certain limitations regarding specimen handling and the timing of collection. Blood samples must be collected in sodium heparin tubes and filled completely to minimize benzene volatilization. Inadequate filling of tubes or incorrect collection timing may lead to inaccurate results. Hemolysis, lipemia, and icterus could interfere with the test results and are grounds for specimen rejection. Properly following collection instructions is essential for the validity of the results.

Draw blood in a green-top (sodium heparin) tube(s) and send 20 mL in two tubes of sodium heparin whole blood refrigerated. Blood should be drawn at end of shift. Tubes should be filled to prevent loss of volatile compound into headspace.

Refrigerate samples immediately after collection.
