Use
This test is used for therapeutic drug monitoring to optimize dosing and monitor patient adherence. It helps identify and quantify benzodiazepines in serum or plasma, providing insight into a patient's medication intake. The test is for medical purposes only and is not valid for forensic use. It is useful in clinical settings to ensure compliance with prescribed treatments and can detect both parent drugs and their metabolites.
Special Instructions
Separate serum or plasma from cells as soon as possible or within 2 hours of collection and transfer to an ARUP standard transport tube. Avoid using gel separator tubes and avoid repeated freeze/thaw cycles when storing samples.
Limitations
The test may not identify all benzodiazepines due to the presence of common metabolites that are also prescription drugs. The absence of expected drugs or metabolites might result from noncompliance, poor absorption, inappropriate timing of specimen collection, or analytical limitations. Results are significant only if concentrations exceed the established cutoff values, and drugs cannot be used for forensic purposes.
