This detailed breakdown helps assess how the liver processes bilirubin and whether bile is flowing properly through the ducts. It is used to diagnose causes of jaundice, evaluate liver function, detect bile duct blockages, and monitor hemolytic disorders or red blood cell breakdown. Elevated indirect bilirubin may indicate liver processing issues or increased red blood cell destruction such as hemolysis or Gilbert’s syndrome; elevated direct bilirubin often points to liver dysfunction or bile duct obstruction due to conditions like hepatitis or gallstones; symptoms prompting testing include yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, abdominal discomfort, or persistent fatigue, and it may also be used to evaluate prolonged jaundice in newborns or diagnose liver/gallbladder conditions in adults.
