Blastomyces Antibody, Enzyme Immunoassay, Serum
Use
This test is useful for aiding in the diagnosis of blastomycosis, which is caused by Blastomyces dermatitidis and Blastomyces gilchristii. These are dimorphic fungi found in various regions of the United States and Canada. The test detects IgG and IgM antibodies to Blastomyces, offering high specificity. However, it may give false-negative results in acutely infected patients and those who are immunosuppressed.
Special Instructions
In cases where the result is equivocal or positive, additional testing by immunodiffusion will be performed. The test requires appropriate forms if not ordered electronically, such as the Infectious Disease Serology Test Request form.
Limitations
The detection of antibodies to Blastomyces does not rule out the presence of other cross-reactive fungal infections. The test does not replace culture or molecular testing, which provide the gold standard for diagnosis but have longer turnaround times. Sensitivity may be affected in acute or localized disease.
