Use
This test is used for the diagnosis and monitoring of a wide range of disorders, including diseases of the bone, kidney, parathyroid gland, or gastrointestinal tract. The calcium level in the serum is an important indicator of various conditions, as calcium ions play significant roles in muscle contractility, nervous system function, blood clotting, and bone mineralization. Hypocalcemia may indicate issues related to the parathyroid glands or vitamin D synthesis, while hypercalcemia can result from primary hyperparathyroidism or certain types of cancer.
Special Instructions
Patients require specific specimen collection, ideally using a serum gel tube, and specimen processing within two hours. It's crucial to note that the patient's age is required for accurate assessment.
Limitations
The test may be affected by interference from gadolinium-based MRI contrast media at higher concentrations. Proper specimen collection and handling are vital to avoid diagnostic confusion. Factors such as improperly handled specimens can lead to erroneous results.

Collection Instructions
If drawing for more than total calcium, send first tube drawn. Serum gel tubes should be centrifuged within 2 hours of collection. Red-top tubes should be centrifuged and the serum aliquoted into a plastic vial within 2 hours of collection.
