Use

This test is used to detect antibodies to Candida albicans, including IgA, IgG, and IgM, using a semi-quantitative enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. It is intended to help diagnose Candida infections by observing changes in antibody levels over time. A significant change in antibody levels between two samples collected at different times is considered the best evidence for a current infection. Persistent low levels of IgM antibodies may occasionally be found more than 12 months post-infection, indicating past exposure.

Special Instructions

The test must be conducted with specific criteria as it is not approved for use in New York state. Laboratories conducting this test should ensure it is performed within a CLIA certified laboratory as it has been developed and its performance characteristics determined by ARUP Laboratories.

Limitations

This test is limited in its clinical utility as it does not provide conclusive evidence of a current Candida infection in isolation. It is most effective when used to observe changes over time in antibody levels. The results can be influenced by past infections as low levels of IgM antibodies may persist for over 12 months. Furthermore, results can be affected by bacterially contaminated, heat-inactivated, hemolyzed, icteric, lipemic, or turbid specimens, which are considered unacceptable conditions for testing.
