Cholesterol, Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL), Calculated, Serum
Use
This test is used for the calculation of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) using total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and triglyceride concentrations. It is particularly useful for managing the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), which includes coronary heart disease, strokes, and peripheral artery disease. The test helps in assessing the risk as LDL-C is the primary lipoprotein responsible for atherogenic plaque, contributing significantly to ASCVD. The levels of LDL-C and non-HDL cholesterol are directly associated with ASCVD risk and are considered "bad" cholesterol. Adjusted LDL-C calculations are more accurate when triglycerides are greater than 150 mg/dL and/or LDL-C is less than 70 mg/dL.

Limitations
The calculated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) is not applicable when triglyceride levels exceed 800 mg/dL. It is advisable to repeat the measurement of LDL-C prior to initiating or modifying lipid therapy. LDL cholesterol results that are 190 mg/dL or above in adults (or >=160 mg/dL in children) may indicate familial hypercholesterolemia.
