Use
Evaluation of pediatric bone marrow specimens for chromosomal abnormalities associated with hematologic malignancies for diagnostic and prognostic purposes in patients being considered for enrollment in Children's Oncology Group clinical trials and research protocols using bone marrow specimens.
Special Instructions
This test is only performed on specimens from pediatric patients being considered for enrollment in a Children's Oncology Group (COG) protocol. For all other patients, order CHRBM / Chromosome Analysis, Hematologic Disorders, Bone Marrow. A reason for referral, a flow cytometry and/or a bone marrow pathology report, and a Children's Oncology Group (COG) registration number and protocol number should be submitted with each specimen. If a child enrolled in the COG protocol has received an opposite sex bone marrow transplant prior to specimen collection, note this information on the request.
Limitations
In some cases, fluorescence in situ hybridization studies may detect some disorders better than conventional chromosome studies. Insufficient bone marrow specimen, use of an improper anticoagulant or improperly mixing the blood with the anticoagulant, clotted bone marrow specimen, excessive transport time, exposure of the specimen to extreme temperature, and not processing the bone marrow as indicated before shipping can lead to issues. Abnormalities might be missed due to sampling error or subtle structural chromosome abnormalities might not be detected by conventional chromosome analysis. Neoplastic cells might not be dividing or not present in bone marrow.

Collection Instructions
It is preferable to send the first aspirate from the bone marrow collection. Invert several times to mix bone marrow.

All specimens will be evaluated at Mayo Clinic Laboratories for test suitability.
