Clostridium difficile Cytotoxin Cell Assay

Use
The Clostridium difficile Cytotoxin Cell Assay is used to detect the presence of cytotoxins produced by Clostridium difficile in stool samples. It is not the preferred initial test for the diagnosis; institutional guidelines recommend alternatives like the Clostridium difficile toxin B gene detection by PCR or a glutamate dehydrogenase and/or toxin detection test. This assay is important for confirming the presence of cytotoxin in suspected cases to guide treatment decisions.
Special Instructions
It is important to consult institutional policies and guidelines for selecting the appropriate test for diagnosing Clostridium difficile infection. The specimen should be transferred into an unpreserved stool transport vial and the acceptable storage and transport temperature is refrigerated. Orders should be coordinated using ARUP supply and client services as needed.
Limitations
The assay is sensitive to conditions such as stability during transportation and storage. It is unsuitable for samples preserved in preservatives or submitted on swabs. Stability is limited to specific conditions: ambient for 2 hours, refrigerated for up to 72 hours, frozen at -20°C for 72 hours, and frozen at -70°C for up to 1 week. Optimal results might not be attained if these conditions are not met.
