Coffee (Coffea spp) IgE
Use
This test measures the level of Immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies specific to Coffee (Coffea spp) in the patient's serum. It is used to assess sensitization to coffee, which may help in diagnosing allergies related to coffee consumption. Detection of specific IgE antibodies can provide supportive information on the possibility of an allergic reaction. Clinical correlation with the patient's history and other diagnostic tests is necessary to confirm allergy diagnosis.
Special Instructions
To perform the test, a blood specimen should be collected, preferably in a serum separator tube (SST) or red-top tube. Once drawn, the serum should be spun down and kept refrigerated in a plastic vial during transport. It's important to note that certain specimens with lipemia may be rejected, and stability conditions for serum should be observed to maintain sample integrity.
Limitations
The test's capacity to detect IgE specific to Coffee does not confirm clinical allergy. Test results should be evaluated in the context of the patient's clinical history and symptomatology. False positives may occur, and IgE levels may not directly correlate with the severity of allergic reactions. Conditions that affect the immune system may also influence IgE measurements. Additionally, the test does not provide data on the cross-reactivity with other allergens.
