Use
The Cortisol, AM & PM test measures the levels of cortisol, a steroid hormone released by the adrenal glands, in the blood. Cortisol levels follow a diurnal cycle, typically being highest in the morning and lowest in the evening. This test helps diagnose conditions related to adrenal gland dysfunction, such as Addison's disease, Cushing's syndrome, and adrenal insufficiency. Monitoring cortisol levels can assist healthcare providers in assessing stress response, metabolism, immune function, and regulation of blood sugar levels.
Special Instructions
Submit two specimens on the same test request form (one collected in the AM and one in the PM as directed by the ordering physician). Print collection times and dates for both specimens on the individual tubes and in clinical information. Patients should be cautioned to stop biotin consumption at least 72 hours prior to the collection of a sample due to potential interference.
Limitations
This test may exhibit interference when the sample is collected from a person consuming high doses of biotin (vitamin B7 or H). Biotin supplementation can interfere with the assay's performance, leading to inaccurate results. It is important to inquire about biotin supplementation in patients prior to testing and advise them to discontinue use prior to sample collection. Minimum volumes do not allow for repeat testing, and specimens must be properly labeled to avoid rejection. Citrate plasma specimens are not acceptable for testing.
