Use
The Corynebacterium diphtheriae Culture test is used to identify the presence of C. diphtheriae in clinical specimens, which is crucial for diagnosing diphtheria. This infection can result in severe respiratory illness and complications, making accurate identification essential for timely treatment and public health management. The test involves culturing the bacteria from samples collected, typically from nasopharynx, throat, or wound swabs.
Special Instructions
Clinical specimens should be collected from the nasopharynx, throat, or wound. The swabs must be submitted in bacterial transport media. Separate orders are required for each collected swab. Note that specimens in UTM or other viral transport media are not acceptable for this test.
Limitations
This test is not suitable for specimens stored under refrigerated or frozen conditions, as these are considered unacceptable. Culture results are negative if no Corynebacterium diphtheriae is isolated. Positive identification may require confirmatory toxin testing by the CDC, as part of the workflow after organism isolation.
