Use
This test aids in the evaluation of patients with vasculitis, macroglobulinemia, or multiple myeloma, especially when symptoms occur with exposure to cold. It utilizes a qualitative measure of cryoglobulins, which are proteins that precipitate at low temperatures, to assess their presence in the patient's blood.
Special Instructions
It is critical to properly collect and transport specimens for this test as quantities less than 3 mL may affect test sensitivity. If the qualitative cryoglobulin test is positive, additional testing with Immunofixation Electrophoresis Typing and Quantitative IgA, IgG, and IgM is performed, with extra charges applicable.
Limitations
This test has limitations if the blood is not maintained at 37 degrees C prior to separation or if specimens are collected into plasma or serum separator tubes, or if grossly hemolyzed or lipemic.

ARUP standard transport tube - prewarmed plain red
Collection Instructions
Draw whole blood in a prewarmed (37 degrees C) syringe or directly into a prewarmed plain red tube. Maintain whole blood at 37 degrees C until clotting is complete. Separate serum using a 37 degrees C centrifuge, if possible.
Patient Preparation
Overnight or minimum of 8 hours fasting required.
Storage Instructions
Store at room temperature. Also acceptable: Refrigerated.
Causes for Rejection
Plasma, serum separator tubes, grossly hemolyzed or lipemic specimens.
