Culture Referred for Identification, Mycobacterium and Nocardia, Varies
Use
This test is used for the rapid identification to the species level for Mycobacterium species, Nocardia species, and other aerobic actinomycete genera from pure culture isolates. Identification to the species level is important for guiding patient care as many of these species are human pathogens. The test employs matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry and/or 16S rDNA sequencing for identification, and rapid PCR for Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex.
Special Instructions
Specimen source and isolate description, including Gram stain reaction and morphology, are required for this test. The organism must be in pure culture and actively growing, without mixed cultures. Specimen should be placed in a large infectious container (T146) and labeled as an infectious substance.
Limitations
If the organism is received in mixed culture or contaminated, the report may be delayed or identification may not be possible. The minimum recommended volume for broth samples is 3 mL; volumes below this may limit initial testing and increase turnaround time. Reflex tests may be performed at an additional cost based on initial results.
