Cysticercus Antibody (IgG), Western Blot, Serum
Use
Used to confirm the presence of IgG antibodies against Taenia solium (pork tapeworm) larvae for clinical suspicion of cysticercosis, particularly neurocysticercosis, as sensitivity increases with the number of cysts present in the central nervous system. A positive ELISA (IgG) may reflex to Western blot for confirmation when the initial screening indicates possible exposure.
Special Instructions
Reflex testing: If Cysticercus IgG Antibody by ELISA is positive, a Western blot is performed at additional charge (CPT 86682). Performing site: Quest Diagnostics Nichols Institute Infectious Diseases lab in San Juan Capistrano. Batched frequency; typical set-up/analytic schedule applies.
Limitations
A negative Western blot does not exclude neurocysticercosis, especially with solitary lesions. Sensitivity is low (≤50%) for solitary cysts and increases if more cysts are present. Cross-reactivity with other parasitic infections may complicate interpretation.
