Use
The Dermatophyte Culture test is used to identify dermatophyte fungi in specimens collected from hair, skin, or nails. Dermatophytes are a group of fungi that cause infections of the skin, hair, and nails due to their ability to utilize keratin. This test is essential for diagnosing infections like athlete's foot, jock itch, and ringworm, providing the necessary information for appropriate antifungal treatment.
Special Instructions
Collect specimens following specific protocols to prevent contamination. It's important to indicate the source of the specimen and any clinical information that may assist in the culture process. Cultures are incubated for up to three weeks before reporting.
Limitations
The test may have limitations in detecting non-dermatophyte fungi or when a mixed fungal infection is present. A prolonged delay in testing can impact the viability of the fungi, potentially leading to false negatives.
