Use
The Extrinsic Pathway Coagulation Factor Profile evaluates the functionality of specific coagulation factors in the extrinsic pathway of blood coagulation. This profile is particularly used to assess bleeding disorders and monitor patients with known deficiencies in factor II, V, VII, or X activities. Anomalies in these factors can indicate various coagulopathies, impacting clinical decisions for anticoagulation therapy, surgical procedures, and overall patient management in conditions like hemophilia or liver disease.
Special Instructions
Specimens should be collected using a blue-top sodium citrate tube. The collection process must ensure proper mixing and separation of plasma. Patients should not have their blood drawn from an arm with a heparin lock or heparinized catheter. Adhere to proper handling and freezing procedures to maintain specimen integrity.
Limitations
Improper sample collection, including underfilled tubes or samples diluted with IV fluids, can lead to inaccurate results. Samples exhibiting severe hemolysis or improper labeling will be rejected. Specimens must remain frozen; thawing during transit can lead to rejection and the need for re-collection. Tests may not detect all variations of factor deficiencies or coagulation disorders, so additional tests may be needed for a comprehensive diagnosis.

Collection Instructions
Citrated plasma samples should be collected by double centrifugation using a blue-top tube containing 3.2% buffered sodium citrate. The sample should be mixed immediately by gentle inversion at least six times. Centrifuge for 10 minutes and carefully remove 2/3 of the plasma, deliver, and recentrifuge. Use a second pipette to remove the plasma, and transfer to a Labcorp PP transpak frozen purple tube. Freeze immediately and maintain frozen until tested.
