Use
This test aids in diagnosing IgE mediated hypersensitivity allergy to non-primate mammalian red meat, such as beef, pork, and venison, as well as meat-derived products like gelatin. It is significant for individuals who may develop anaphylactic reactions to cetuximab due to the presence of IgE antibodies against galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose (alpha-gal). Sensitization typically occurs through tick bites or exposure to the drug cetuximab. Delayed allergic responses are prevalent, often occurring 3 to 6 hours after ingestion of mammalian meat. Symptoms include urticaria, angioedema, difficulty breathing, abdominal pain, and anaphylaxis.
Special Instructions
The test is not useful for patients previously treated with immunotherapy to determine if residual clinical sensitivity exists or when medical management does not depend on allergen specificity identification.
Limitations
Some individuals with clinically insignificant sensitivity to allergens may have measurable levels of IgE antibodies, leading to false positives. The test may not be useful for patients whose medical management does not depend on allergen identification.
