Galectin-3 With NT-proBNP
Also known as: NT-proBNP
Use
Galectin-3 is a biomarker of fibrosis and adverse remodeling, which is associated with a more progressive form of chronic heart failure. The BG Galectin-3 assay helps in assessing the prognosis of patients diagnosed with chronic heart failure. Elevated levels of galectin-3 have been observed in approximately 30% of NYHA class II/III outpatient populations, as well as in patients with both systolic dysfunction and preserved ejection fraction. Galectin-3 levels do not serve as a marker of cardiac distress or decompensation.
Special Instructions
Not provided.
Limitations
Galectin-3 levels lower than or equal to 17.8 ng/mL indicate a lower risk of adverse outcomes, while levels greater than 17.8 ng/mL indicate a higher risk. Levels between 17.8 ng/mL and 25.9 ng/mL should be interpreted with caution within the reference range. NT-proBNP cutpoints vary by age, helping diagnose or exclude heart failure in patients with acute dyspnea. Elevated galectin-3 may correlate with clinical variables such as age, gender, co-morbidities, and NYHA classification, but should not guide therapy changes.
