Use
This test is useful for general screening to assess potential drug abuse involving Gamma-Hydroxybutyric Acid (GHB). When the initial screening indicates a positive result, confirmatory testing is performed to provide quantitative results. GHB is screened and quantified using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), a precise method known for its reliability in toxicology testing.
Special Instructions
The test is not performed at ARUP; separate specimens must be submitted when multiple tests are ordered. Ensure that the specimen is separated from cells as soon as possible or within two hours of collection.
Limitations
The test is designed to screen for the presence of gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) and reflexes to a confirmation and quantitation phase. False positives can occur, which necessitates the confirmation testing for any initial positive screens. The performance characteristics of this test were developed and determined by NMS Labs but have not been cleared or approved by the US FDA, which may limit its use in certain regulated environments.
