Clinical Use

Use

This test is useful for establishing a diagnosis of an allergy to Glycyphagus domesticus, defining the allergen responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms, and identifying allergens responsible for allergic response and/or anaphylactic episodes. It can also confirm sensitization prior to beginning immunotherapy and investigate the specificity of allergic reactions to insect venom allergens, drugs, or chemical allergens. It is not useful in patients previously treated with immunotherapy to determine if residual clinical sensitivity exists or in patients where the medical management does not depend on the identification of allergen specificity.

Special Instructions

Patients should complete an Allergen Test Request form if not ordered electronically. Serum should be centrifuged, and the aliquot placed in a plastic vial. For the best results in allergen testing, 0.5 mL of serum is required for every 5 allergens requested. Ensure all specimens follow the transport guidelines before submission to avoid rejection.

Limitations

Some individuals with clinically insignificant sensitivity to allergens may have measurable levels of IgE antibodies in serum, and results must be interpreted in the clinical context. False-positive results for IgE antibodies may occur in patients with markedly elevated serum IgE (>2500 kU/L) due to nonspecific binding to allergen solid phases. Testing for IgE antibodies in patients with immunotherapy treatment is not effective for determining residual sensitivity. Documentation of appropriate test selection and handling is essential for accurate results.
