Use

The Hepatitis A Virus Panel is a diagnostic test used to detect the presence of hepatitis A antibodies in the blood. It includes Hepatitis A Antibodies, Total and Hepatitis A Antibody, IgM, both of which help determine the immune status or recent infection of a patient with HAV. The test can aid in diagnosing acute HAV infection or assessing immunity following vaccination. It is typically ordered for individuals presenting with symptoms consistent with hepatitis infection.

Special Instructions

This panel is not recommended. To diagnose acute HAV infection, it is suggested to refer to Hepatitis A Virus Antibody, IgM (0020093) or Hepatitis Panel, Acute with Reflex to HBsAg Confirmation and Reflex to HCV by Quantitative NAAT (3002989). For assessing immunity, order Hepatitis A Virus Antibodies (Total) (0020591).

Limitations

The panel may not fully differentiate between recent infection and the immune response following vaccination against Hepatitis A. False positives can occur. Borderline results on IgM may require retesting at one-week intervals to determine seroconversion status. Unacceptable conditions include specimens with particulate matter, severely hemolyzed, lipemic, or heat-inactivated specimens, and those collected in citrate-based anticoagulant.

Collect specimen in a serum separator tube. Also acceptable: Lavender (EDTA) or pink (K2EDTA). Separate serum or plasma from cells ASAP or within 2 hours of collection. Transfer to an ARUP standard transport tube.

Causes for Rejection

Specimens containing particulate material. Severely hemolyzed or lipemic specimens. Heat-inactivated specimens. Specimens collected in citrate-based anticoagulant.
