Use
The test is useful for diagnosing recent or past hepatitis B in pregnant individuals and determining occult hepatitis B in hepatitis B virus carriers with negative test results for various hepatitis B markers. The test is specifically used to screen or test pregnant individuals who may have risk factors for hepatitis B virus infection. However, it should not be used for differentiating among different states of hepatitis B infection or for screening blood donor specimens.
Special Instructions
This test should not be used to test symptomatic individuals suspected of hepatitis B. For such cases, a different test such as HBC should be ordered. It is also not recommended for asymptomatic, nonpregnant individuals without risk factors. The date of collection is required when submitting the specimen, and patients should avoid taking biotin supplements 24 hours before specimen collection.
Limitations
The test should not be used for the screening or confirmatory testing of blood, plasma, and tissue donors as it is not licensed for these purposes by the FDA. It may not detect all infected individuals, and interference from high titer antibodies, streptavidin, or ruthenium is possible. False positives may occur due to various factors including the presence of sodium azide, or in patients with antibodies to other viruses. The test results should be considered alongside clinical history and other examinations.
