Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) Patient Management

Use
This panel is intended for use in the management of patients with chronic hepatitis B and to assess the efficacy of antiviral treatment. A positive HBsAg test will reflex to HBeAg, anti-HBe, HBV quantitative DNA, and ALT.
Special Instructions
It is crucial to inquire about biotin (vitamin B7/B8, vitamin H, or coenzyme R) supplementation as high doses can interfere with test results. Patients should stop taking biotin at least 72 hours before specimen collection. Additional charges may apply if reflex tests are performed.
Limitations
The anti-HBe assay has not been validated for children under 17, pregnant women, or immunocompromised patients. The HBV quantitative real-time PCR assay's sensitivity range is 10 to 1,000,000,000 IU/mL. Interference from high dose biotin supplementation is a concern, and specimens must not be heat-inactivated or collected inadequately to ensure accurate results.

Collection Instructions
Two samples must be submitted. For all tests except DNA, if not using a gel-barrier tube, transfer the separated serum to a plastic transport tube. For HBV DNA, centrifuge within 24 hours of collection and transfer to a screw-cap polypropylene transport tube before freezing.
Patient Preparation
Patients should stop biotin consumption 72 hours prior to collection.
Storage Instructions
For all tests except DNA: Refrigerated preferred for up to 7 days, frozen up to 14 days. For HBV DNA: Frozen preferred up to 12 weeks, refrigerated up to 6 days. Room temperature stability varies.
Causes for Rejection
Heat-inactivated specimens; cord blood; cadaveric specimens; body fluid other than serum or EDTA plasma; gross hemolysis; excessive lipemia; improper labeling
