Use
Human Herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) infects T-lymphocytes and is associated with conditions such as exanthema subitum. The detection of HHV-6 antibodies indicates prior exposure, but due to the high prevalence of these antibodies, the presence of a single titer has limited clinical value. Serologic evidence of an acute infection or reactivation is demonstrated by a significant rise or seroconversion of IgG and IgM titers. This test, when used in conjunction with the Herpesvirus 6 Antibody, IgM by IFA, Serum, assists in diagnosing HHV-6 disease in immunocompromised adults.

Limitations
Due to the high prevalence of HHV-6 antibodies, correlations of single titers with specific diseases are of limited clinical value. This test has not been cleared or approved by the FDA but has been validated under CLIA regulations for clinical use.
