Iron Stain, technical only
Use
The iron special stain is used to detect ferric iron deposits in tissue samples. When applied, the stain reacts with ferric iron to form a blue pigment, allowing pathologists to identify conditions such as hemosiderosis and hemochromatosis, where iron accumulates abnormally in tissues. This staining method is particularly useful in liver and bone marrow biopsies to assess iron storage and diagnose related disorders. It is a technical component only, and does not include a pathologist read.
Special Instructions
This test is for the technical component only and pathologist interpretation is not included. Please ensure specimens are fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin or B-Plus fixative.
Limitations
The iron stain can detect ferric iron deposits but is limited to the identification of hemosiderosis and hemochromatosis. It does not quantify iron levels or differentiate between causes of iron accumulation. Specimens must meet fixation requirements to avoid rejection.
