Use
Aids in the detection of acute leptospirosis. The presence of IgM antibodies to Leptospira suggests a current or recent infection. Negative results indicate that the antibody is not present or is below the detection level of the method. It is recommended to confirm an initially-negative result with a follow-up sample two to three weeks later.
Special Instructions
Parallel testing is preferred, and convalescent specimens must be received within 30 days of the acute specimens. Refrigerated transport is required, and it is important to avoid repeated freeze/thaw cycles.
Limitations
A negative result does not rule out the possibility of leptospirosis, as antibodies may not be present during early disease. Equivocal results should be interpreted cautiously with further testing recommended. Antibody presence alone cannot be used for the diagnosis of acute infection, as antibodies from prior exposure may persist for a prolonged time.
