Lidocaine and Metabolite Quantitative, Serum or Plasma
Use
Lidocaine is an amide type of anesthetic commonly used as a topical and injectable analgesic and as an antiarrhythmic agent. It is also utilized in resuscitative efforts and as an agent in various procedures requiring anesthesia. Monitoring lidocaine levels is important to ensure therapeutic effectiveness while avoiding toxicity. The active metabolite, monoethylglycinexylidide (MEGX), is also measured to assess drug metabolism and support therapeutic drug monitoring.
Special Instructions
Specimens must be separated from cells as soon as possible or within 2 hours of collection to ensure the integrity of the sample. The test is not performed at ARUP Laboratories, hence separate specimens must be submitted when multiple tests are ordered to avoid test interference.
Limitations
Gas chromatography is sensitive to various compounds that may interfere with the identity and quantity of the target analytes, such as diphenhydramine. The accuracy of the test results depends on the proper collection, handling, and processing of specimens. Improper handling may result in degradation of lidocaine or its metabolites. Additionally, separator tubes are unacceptable for this test.
