Use
This test is useful for general testing in contexts of compliance and/or abuse. It is the preferred test to follow-up presumptive results, providing quantitative analysis of methylphenidate and its metabolite, ritalinic acid, in urine. Detection of these substances helps in assessing compliance with prescribed methylphenidate treatments and monitoring for potential misuse or abuse.
Special Instructions
Ensure that a random urine sample is collected and transferred promptly to an ARUP Standard Transport Tube without any additives or preservatives. The specimen must be refrigerated immediately after collection to maintain stability and prevent degradation of the analytes.
Limitations
The test is not valid for forensic use and is intended for clinical purposes only. Absence of expected drug(s) and/or drug metabolite(s) may indicate non-compliance, inappropriate timing of specimen collection relative to drug administration, or issues such as poor drug absorption or adulteration/dilution of the urine sample. The test is a laboratory developed test and has not been cleared or approved by the FDA. Results must be interpreted carefully, particularly for values close to the cutoff concentrations, as this may affect the diagnostic outcome.
