Monoclonal Protein Isotype, Quantitative, Serum
Use
This test is used for aiding in the diagnosis and monitoring of monoclonal gammopathies, especially when used in conjunction with free light chain studies. Monoclonal proteins, or M-proteins, are markers for monoclonal gammopathies, which can include a range of diagnoses from multiple myeloma to monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS). The Mayo Clinic MASSFIX method offers enhanced sensitivity in detecting M-proteins and can replace traditional methods for common M-protein isotypes like IgG, IgA, and IgM.
Special Instructions
This test is not orderable as an individual test but can be ordered only as part of a profile. For ordering, see the Monoclonal Protein Study, Quantitative, Serum (QMPSS). Proper serum collection and preparation involve centrifuging and aliquoting serum into a plastic vial.
Limitations
Quantitation of IgD, IgE, free kappa, and free lambda cannot be performed by this assay. Free light chain monoclonal proteins should be quantified using the Immunoglobulin Free Light Chains, Serum test. IgD and IgE require separate assays and are not covered by this test. Results are highly dependent on the proper processing and handling of specimens.
