Mouse Epithelium, IgE, Serum
Use
This test is useful for establishing a diagnosis of an allergy to mouse epithelium. It helps in defining the specific allergens responsible for causing signs and symptoms of allergic reactions. It is also used to confirm sensitization prior to beginning immunotherapy and to investigate the specificity of allergic reactions to different allergens such as insect venom, drugs, or chemicals. Testing for IgE antibodies is not useful in patients who have been previously treated with immunotherapy if the medical management does not depend on identifying allergen specificity.
Special Instructions
Centrifuge and aliquot serum into a plastic vial. The preferred collection container is a serum gel tube, but a red top is also acceptable. If not ordering electronically, complete and send an Allergen Test Request (T236) with the specimen.
Limitations
Testing for IgE antibodies may not be useful in patients who have undergone immunotherapy. Some individuals with clinically insignificant sensitivity may have measurable IgE levels, requiring interpretation in clinical context. False-positive results may occur in patients with high serum IgE (>2500 kU/L) due to nonspecific binding.
