Clinical Use

Use

The Mycophenolic Acid and Metabolites test is used for optimizing drug therapy and monitoring patient adherence. It is critical for therapeutic drug monitoring, particularly in managing drug concentrations to maximize efficacy while minimizing toxicity. The test measures the levels of mycophenolic acid (MPA), a drug commonly used in transplant patients as an immunosuppressant to prevent organ rejection, along with its metabolite, mycophenolic acid glucuronide. This information helps in adjusting dosages for maintaining the desired therapeutic level of MPA while preventing adverse effects.

Special Instructions

Timing of specimen collection should be pre-dose (trough) draw at steady state concentration to ensure accuracy in measuring drug levels. It is important to separate serum or plasma from cells within 2 hours of collection and to transfer at least 1 mL to an ARUP Standard Transport Tube for proper analysis.

Limitations

This test was developed and its performance characteristics were determined by ARUP Laboratories. It has not been cleared or approved by the US Food and Drug Administration but is performed in a CLIA certified laboratory and is intended for clinical purposes. Interpretation should consider that mycophenolic acid glucuronide is an inactive metabolite, and during the first two weeks of transplantation, glucuronide levels are usually higher.
