Use
The Neonatal and Infantile Seizures Panel is designed to evaluate patients for underlying metabolic causes of neonatal seizures, which are defined as occurring within the first 28 days of life. This panel plays a crucial role in identifying potential etiologies, as neonatal seizures, which have a prevalence of 1.5%, can signal neurologic dysfunction. Clinicians utilize this comprehensive test to determine the underlying cause of seizures, which may include hypoxic ischemic events, infectious factors, electrolyte imbalances, or metabolic disorders. In cases of status epilepticus in children, metabolic conditions are present in approximately 4% of those evaluated, making this testing vital for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning. The findings from this panel can guide subsequent diagnostic and genetic testing.
Special Instructions
When collecting specimens, ensure that samples are processed and shipped according to specified methods to maintain sample integrity. Plasma should be drawn and processed utilizing heparin tubes, while serum must be collected using no-additive or serum gel tubes, promptly separated and frozen. For cerebrospinal fluid, same-day processing is critical. Proper collection and prompt shipping are essential for reliable results. Always follow specific instructions for skin biopsies to enhance cell viability, using RPMI media when available.
Limitations
The panel may not identify all metabolic conditions, especially those that are rare or have atypical presentations. Furthermore, results may vary based on factors such as specimen quality and timing of collection. It is important to consider that interpreting the results requires expertise in metabolic disorders, and follow-up testing may be necessary for conclusive diagnosis.
