Nontuberculous Slowly-growing Mycobacterium Susceptibility−Broth Dilution

Use
Determine the susceptibility of nontuberculous slowly-growing mycobacterial isolates to a profile of antimycobacterial agents. Clinical breakpoints for M. kansasii and Nontuberculosis Mycobacteria other than M. avium Complex are the same. Some fastidious isolates may not exhibit adequate growth for susceptibility testing (M. genvense, M. haemophilum). Others such as M. gordonae are rarely clinically relevant and susceptibility testing is not recommended. If patients are not responding to several months of therapy, repeat susceptibility testing is recommended.
Special Instructions
If patients fail to respond to several months of therapy, repeat susceptibility testing may be recommended. Some isolates, like M. gordonae, are rarely clinically relevant and may not require susceptibility testing. Accurate organism identification is necessary before reporting susceptibility results.
Limitations
The test cannot report susceptibilities if the organism fails to grow in the test medium. Additionally, susceptibilities cannot be performed on mixed cultures, and clear organism identification is required before any susceptibility results are shared. The performance characteristics were determined by Labcorp and the test has not been cleared or approved by the FDA.
