Use

This test is used for monitoring patient adherence to prescribed opiates. It quantifies the presence of specific opiates in serum or plasma to ensure that patients are taking their medications as prescribed. The test is not valid for forensic use due to the presence of common metabolites that can originate from various opiates, some of which may themselves be prescription drugs. The concentration value must be above the cutoff level to be considered positive.

Special Instructions

The test is developed as a Laboratory Developed Test (LDT) and is performed in a CLIA certified laboratory. It is important to separate serum or plasma from cells within 2 hours of collection and store specimens appropriately to prevent degradation or inaccurate results.

Limitations

Identification of specific drugs taken by the specimen donor can be problematic. Factors such as noncompliance, inappropriate timing, poor absorption, or testing limitations can lead to expected drugs not being detected. Drug identification is further complicated by common metabolites from multiple opiates. All drugs measured are in the non-glucuronidated (free) form. The test's performance characteristics have not been cleared or approved by the FDA.
