Use
This test is used to quantitatively detect opiates in urine samples. It is primarily intended for use in clinical settings to assess for compliance in patients prescribed opiate medications and to identify potential misuse or abuse. Identification of specific drugs taken by a specimen donor can be challenging due to common metabolites that may also represent separate prescription drugs. The use of this test is strictly for medical purposes and should not be used for forensic purposes as it only detects the free (non-glucuronidated) forms of the drugs.
Special Instructions
Preferred test for following up on presumptive results. For general screening, use 'Opiates, Urine Screen with Reflex to Quantitation'. The test evaluates non-glucuronidated (free) forms of the drugs; collections should avoid repeated freeze/thaw cycles to prevent degradation.
Limitations
The test cannot conclusively identify the specific drug(s) ingested due to common metabolites that might also be separate prescriptions. Absence of expected drugs/metabolites in the urine may indicate non-compliance, inappropriate timing of specimen collection, or poor drug absorption. Positive concentrations must meet or exceed the cutoffs for valid result declaration, and trace unexpected drug analytes may be due to pharmaceutical impurities.
