Use

The Oxcarbazepine Metabolite, Serum test is useful for monitoring serum concentration during oxcarbazepine therapy. It helps assess patient compliance and potential toxicity associated with Oxcarbazepine usage. Oxcarbazepine serves as monotherapy and adjunctive therapy for partial seizures. It is metabolized to 10-hydroxy-10,11-dihydrocarbamazepine (MHC), which is the active metabolite responsible for the therapeutic effects of Oxcarbazepine. The test measures the concentration of this active metabolite in serum, which is crucial for adjusting dosage and avoiding toxicity.

Special Instructions

Collect the specimen immediately before the next scheduled dose. Ensure serum is separated from cells within 2 hours of collection to maintain specimen integrity. Limitations

This test cannot be performed on whole blood; only serum separated within 2 hours is acceptable. Specimen handling issues such as improper separation from cells, or using inappropriate containers, may lead to reject specifications. Toxic levels for Oxcarbazepine have not been well established, and some patients may exhibit effective therapeutic concentration ranges outside the typical therapeutic range of 10-35 mcg/mL.
