Use
This test is useful for the gross identification of parasites, such as worms, and arthropods, including ticks, bed bugs, lice, and mites. It aids in detecting or eliminating the suspicion of parasitic infection by identifying suspect material passed in stool or found on the body. Additionally, it supports the diagnosis of delusional parasitosis and identifies ticks, including Ixodes species which are vectors for Lyme disease. The identification of these specimens enables appropriate treatment and counseling for infectious diseases spread by macroscopic vectors.
Special Instructions
When ordering this test, it is important to provide the specimen source and isolate description, including morphology, tests performed, and location of specimen. If ordering electronically, the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Test Request form (T728) must be completed, printed, and sent with the specimen if not ordering electronically.
Limitations
This test does not include analysis of ticks for the presence of Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease. Testing ticks for potential pathogens is not recommended as it does not indicate if the organism has been passed to the host during feeding. Morphological features of ticks, such as gender and degree of engorgement, are more useful for assessing the risk of Borrelia burgdorferi transmission. Only female ticks that have been attached for 36 hours or more pose a risk for Lyme disease. Non-engorged ticks pose little risk.

Collection Instructions
1. For scabies: Submit skin scrapings on a glass microscope slide, enclosed with a rubber band, in a clean, dry container. 2. For worms: Submit whole worms and worm segments in 70% alcohol or formalin. 3. For arthropods: Submit in a clean, dry container.
