Use
This test is intended to be used as an aid in the diagnosis of infections caused by parvovirus B19.
Special Instructions
The test requires whole blood collected in a lavender-top (EDTA) tube. The specimen should be maintained at room temperature and is stable for up to 7 days. It is crucial not to freeze the specimen as it becomes unstable when frozen. Ensure there is sufficient specimen quantity to allow repeat testing if necessary. Testing schedules can vary, and additional time should be allowed for confirmatory tests.
Limitations
The test has certain limitations including the possibility of false negatives if the parvovirus is present in low quantities that fall below the detection limit of the PCR method. Furthermore, inhibitors present in the specimen may interfere with the amplification process, potentially leading to invalid results. Additionally, improper specimen handling and storage conditions, such as freezing, can compromise the test's accuracy. Gross contamination and insufficient sample volumes may lead to specimen rejection.
