Use
This test is useful for indicating the presence of infections or fistulas, verifying the effectiveness of treatment to reduce stomach pH, and diagnosing disease states characterized by abnormal stomach acidity. It measures the hydrogen ion concentration in a body fluid to provide insights into the condition of the fluid, such as identifying gastric fluid or characterizing the fluid's nature. It is not appropriate for the measurement of pleural fluid pH due to stability and transport requirements of such specimens.

Limitations
This test should not be used for pleural fluid pH measurement; such measurements should be performed using a blood gas analyzer at the collection site to ensure sample stability. The pH of a specimen can be affected by exposure to air and time delays, which cause an increase in pH as carbon dioxide is lost. Specimens should be collected, maintained anaerobically, and tested promptly after collection to ensure accuracy.
