Use
This test is used to diagnose Bernard-Soulier syndrome or Glanzmann thrombasthenia in patients with a lifelong history of platelet-type bleeding. It evaluates the expression of platelet surface glycoproteins, including GPIb (CD42b) and GPIIb/IIIa (CD41/CD61), to assess possible deficiencies or abnormalities associated with these conditions.
Special Instructions
Performing this test requires whole blood collected in lavender (EDTA), pink (K2EDTA), or yellow (ACD solution B) tubes. It is crucial to transport the blood at room temperature or refrigerated and to ensure the specimen is neither clotted, hemolyzed, nor older than 72 hours for accurate results.
Limitations
The test alone cannot confirm asymptomatic carriers of Bernard-Soulier syndrome or Glanzmann thrombasthenia. Further sequence analysis is recommended if a carrier state is suspected. Platelet transfusions prior to testing can artificially increase normal platelet levels, affecting results. Hence, results should be interpreted with caution if the patient has recently received a platelet transfusion.
