Propafenone Quantitation, Serum or Plasma

Use
Optimize drug therapy and monitor patient adherence. This test is used for quantifying Propafenone levels in serum or plasma to assess patient compliance and therapeutic drug monitoring. Propafenone is commonly used as an antiarrhythmic medication to treat complex ventricular ectopic activity, and monitoring is essential to ensure effective treatment and minimize side effects.
Special Instructions
The use of peak serum levels is recommended for patient monitoring as blood drug levels drop rapidly, leading to many negative results at the trough. Peak serum concentration occurs 3 to 4 hours post dose. Test is not performed at ARUP; separate specimens must be submitted when multiple tests are ordered.
Limitations
The test is developed and its performance characteristics determined by NMS Labs. It has not been cleared or approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. Trough levels may not provide a reliable indication of therapeutic levels due to rapid drop in blood drug levels after dosing, thus may result in negative results.
