Clinical Use

Use

Assessing sensitization to various inhalant allergens commonly found in the arid Southwest region, including the southern Arizona desert and the southern California desert. This test defines the allergen responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms and is useful in identifying allergens responsible for allergic responses or anaphylactic episodes. It also confirms sensitization prior to beginning immunotherapy and investigates the specificity of allergic reactions to insect venom allergens, drugs, or chemical allergens.

Limitations

This test is not useful for patients previously treated with immunotherapy to determine if residual clinical sensitivity exists or in whom the medical management does not depend upon identification of allergen specificity. Elevated concentrations of total IgE are not diagnostic for allergic disease, and normal concentrations do not eliminate the possibility of allergic disease. False-positive results for IgE antibodies may occur in patients with markedly elevated serum IgE (>2500 kU/L) due to nonspecific binding.
