Respiratory Viruses DFA with Reflex to Viral Culture, Respiratory

Use
This test is used for the detection of respiratory viruses including influenza (A, B), parainfluenza (1, 2, 3), adenovirus, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and human metapneumovirus (hMPV). It is particularly useful when the detection of respiratory viruses in addition to influenza is important. Molecular methods are preferred for immunocompromised and hospitalized patients, but this test offers a broader viral detection through immunofluorescent staining combined with cell culture techniques.
Special Instructions
If DFA results are negative or inadequate, the test reflexes to a respiratory viral culture for confirmation, which may incur additional charges. Specimen source is preferred for accurate results.
Limitations
The sensitivity of the DFA methodology is highly dependent on the adequacy of the specimen collected. If the specimen contains fewer than 20 cells, the DFA result will be reported as 'inadequate', potentially requiring a reflex to viral culture for confirmation.
