Clinical Use

Use

This test is used for evaluating patients at risk for connective tissue diseases, with or without interstitial lung disease. It differentiates between antibodies to Ro52 and Ro60 in patients known to be positive for anti-SS-A (Ro) antibodies. These antibodies are associated with various autoimmune diseases such as Sjogren's syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosus, systemic sclerosis, idiopathic inflammatory myopathy, rheumatoid arthritis, and primary biliary cholangitis. The presence of these antibodies may indicate increased risk for congenital heart block in children born to positive mothers.

Special Instructions

Centrifuge and aliquot serum into a plastic vial as per the collection instructions. The test requires a volume of 1 mL of serum, with a minimum volume of 0.8 mL necessary for a clinically relevant result.

Limitations

Results should be interpreted in the context of clinical findings and other laboratory testing. The test cannot solely define a diagnosis for any connective tissue disease or related disorder. Standard SS-A (Ro) immunoassays may not detect antibodies specific for SSA 52 (Ro52) or SSA 60 (Ro60) due to epitope masking. Differentiation may not occur when multiplex bead assays are used.
